Hyun was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea with his older brother. He graduated from Chung-Ang University in 2004, where he majored in Theater Studies.

In February 2006, Hyun began dating Hwang Ji-Yeon. They separated in March 2007. While shooting The World They Live In (2008) he met Song Hye Kyo, and subsequently started dating her in June 2009. This was confirmed by both Hyun and Song's talent agencies
